Kids with Cancer Foundation Day Unit and Clinic (C2N)The Hospital has a 9 bed medical day-only unit that provides a range of services for children with cancer and blood diseases. An anaesthetist provides an anaesthetic or sedation to children having procedures (eg lumbar punctures, bone marrow aspirates) on two afternoons every week. A play therapist assists children before, during and after procedures. Children have short and long chemotherapy regimes (up to 8 hours) in the day-only unit. Blood product transfusions are also administered in the day-only unit. Apheresis, including stem cell and dedicated blood product donation, is provided in the day-only unit. The Long-term follow-up clinic is a multi-disciplinary clinic and provides follow-up for children and adults who have received therapy for childhood cancer. A Clinical Nurse Consultant supports this clinic and ensures appropriate follow-up is undertaken. Clinics run 5 days per week, Monday to Friday, by appointment. A volunteer is available most days to organise in-door activities for waiting children and their siblings. The clinic is also an opportunity for the family newsletter coordinator to catch up with patients on and off active treatment.
