News Letter

The Family Newsletter was established in 1987 by a parent volunteer, Merron Howard, with assistance from the medical staff, in response to an expressed need from parents who desired to maintain contact with other families and staff from the CCC&BD. The newsletter contains information that can assist families dealing with diagnosis, a relapse, death of a child or those at the difficult time of the child ceasing treatment yet still feeling concerned for the future. Contributions from staff and families are included and these cover the range of emototions you may feel and issues that may help you feel less alone. The newsletter is mailed out quarterly. Newly diagnosed patients are automatically added to the current mailing list. Articles may include:

  • personal experiences such as a family's reaction to an aspect of childhood cancer, eg.
  • starting school and milestones in your child's life
  • medical progress in the treatment of diseases and staff updates
  • support services, news and
  • a link-up with families who desire to be contacts for other families with a similar disease diagnosis.

The newsletter is your opportunity to share ideas and experiences. Information can be given to any parent volunteer or placed in the yellow book-return box located in the outside room in the C2W or posted to:

Patient and Family Handbook

In addition to the quarterly newsletter, a Patient and Family Handbook is given to each newly diagnosed patient and their family by the Social Worker. The handbook offers families information about general hospital procedures, disease and treatment information and coping and support services.
