Information Regarding Children Going for Scans

If your child is under 5 years of age, 4 hour fasting for solids and liquids prior to sedation for scanning will be required.

BONE SCAN
Injection of isotope at time of appointment. Scanning time: 2 hours later. Your child will return to the ward and if under 5 years of age will be sedated for the scan.
Duration of scan: Approx 1 hour

GALLIUM SCAN
Injection of isotope at time of appointment. Scanning time: 24 - 48 hours after injection. Delayed images of the abdomen may be required as gallium is excreted in the bowel. Nuclear Medicine Nursing Staff will notify ward of time and day for scanning.

Preparation:
As gallium is absorbed and excreted through the bowel it is important that your child takes a laxative until scanning is finished, as a full bowel can give a false impression on the scan. Scanning time: If your child is under 5 years of age sedation will be given for the time of scanning appointment.
Duration of scan: Approx 1 hour

MIBG SCAN
Pre-medication for Scan:

For four days prior to your appointment date your child will be given 2 drops of Lugol's iodine in milk or orange juice twice a day and continue taking this until scanning is completed. It is imperative that Lugol's iodine is diluted in milk or orange juice and never given neat.

Injection of isotope is at time of appointment and scanning is 48 hours after injection. Nuclear Medicine Nursing Staff will notify the ward of the time and day for scanning. If your child is under 5 years of age sedation will be given for time of scanning appointment.
Duration of scan: Approx 11/2 hours

LUNG CLEARANCE SCAN
If your child is under 5 years of age sedation will be given for time of appointment. There is no delay, scanning is performed at time of appointment.
Duration of scan: Approx 30 minutes

DTPA + GFR (Kidney scan)
If your child is under 5 years of age sedation will be given for time of appointment. There is no delay, scanning is performed at time of appointment. Venous blood is taken, pre-scan and at intervals of 1 hour and 3 hours after injection.

GATED HEART POOL SCAN
If your child is under 5 years of age sedation will be given for time of appointment. Your child will be injected on arrival and 20 minutes later will have blood taken for labelling after which it is injected back into your child and 10 minutes later scanning will commence. Total time in the Department is approximately 11/2 hours.
